Finally!!! There’s a better (I emphasize better here) alternative to Comcast Cable. The largest cable and second biggest internet provider in the United States is Comcast. On July 30th 2008 Comcast stated in their quaterly earnings, “It earned $632 million, or 21 cents a share, compared with $588 million, or 19 cents a share, in the same quarter a year ago. Revenue rose to $8.55 billion from $7.71 billion in the second quarter of 2007 (http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/comcast-profit-rises-8-misses/story.aspx?guid={EE2ADE97-65BD-4E6B-911F-10D466F5A473}&dist=hpts).” So don’t feel sorry for Comcast when reading about the new competition coming from the Verizon’s Fiber Optic network. Yes, you heard right.. Verizon your local phone and mobile phone company has put a ton of money investing in their vast fiber optic network. Unlike other tecnologies the picture is better than regualr cable, the internet speeds are faster, and they throw in the phone line too, all at a lower price! 4 years ago Verizon began it’s mission to to run fiber optic cables along existing telephone lines past 19 million homes. The network is called FIOS and the total investment cost was a staggering $23 billion. I personally applaud Verizon for stepping up and taking a risk in a expensive technology of the future. The fiber optic system cost averages out at approximately $4,000 per customer. The cost is now down to $760 per household as this technology tends to become cheaper as time goes by. (http://www.nwanews.com/adg/Business/235398/). “Verizon told the New York Times that 20 percent of the homes where FiOS is available buy its video service and 24 percent buy its Internet service (http://www.fiercetelecom.com/story/verizon-says-fios-bet-already-paying/2008-08-19).” For Internet, TV, and phone service the cost is only $130.00. The Internet is 5x faster than your current cable internet. With FIOS TV you get all digital cable TV plans starting at $47.99, first month free, free activation, free DVR for 12 months, free HBO and Cinemax for the first 30 days, and over 200 channels. Visit Verizon.com to see if FIOS is in your area.
