Coffee The Cure For Tinnitus?

By itself it tastes very bitter, over half of Americans drink it every day and it just might prevent people from developing Tinnitus. It’s coffee and it is not just for waking up anymore… maybe.

A recent news article found on WebMD suggests that women who drank more coffee than their peers appeared to be less likely to develop Tinnitus than women who drank less coffee or did not drink any coffee at all. Tinnitus is a condition which causes a persistent buzzing or ringing sound in their ear(s). The researchers studied over 60,000 women between the ages of 30 and 44 years old. None of these women had Tinnitus when the study began in 1991. Over the next 18 years 5,300 of these women developed Tinnitus.

The researchers found that the women who consumed as much as 450mg to 600 mg of caffeine on most days were less likely to develop Tinnitus. In fact, the women who drank less than 150 mg of caffeine appeared to be 15% more likely to experience symptoms of Tinnitus. 150 mg of caffeine is equal to approximately 12 ounces of coffee.

According to the August, 2014 issue of The American Journal of Medicine, most of the caffeine consumed by these women came from coffee. As of now it is not understood why caffeine could possibly inhibit the development of Tinnitus. It is known that caffeine can impact both the central nervous system and the inner ear. The researchers caution that this study does not prove that caffeine inhibits Tinnitus and that more studies will need to be conducted.
