This is a very useful cost of living calculator I found on CNBC.com/BankRate.com web sites, especially if you plan on moving anytime soon. The tool shows you how much additional income you would need to make in order to maintain the same lifestyle in the new city. I live here in Seattle so I guess I’m in one of the more expensive areas according to the cost of living calculator… this calculator seems to be accurate, Seattle is an expensive city! I was actually just in New York and was shocked to discover that Seattle and New York have a lot in common when it comes to prices. Take out food in New York was cheaper. Sales tax in New York is 8.375% and in Seattle it’s 8.9%. Rent (Outside Manhattan) is on par with Seattle rates. Transportation costs when comparing to Seattle is cheaper because you end up riding the Subway everywhere. In Seattle driving a car adds up with the new 9.5 cents a gallon gas tax. Least we don’t have New York’s new abysmal sales tax law that undermines internet marketers. What Washington does have, however, is a law just signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire that forces “Internet and catalog companies to collect and send the state sales taxes on purchases made by Washington residents.” This may be somewhat of a stretch regarding the comparison between these two cities, but my point is I was expecting sticker shock and that did not happen.

See below for some example comparisons. Click here for the actual cost of living calculator and compare your hometown to other geographic areas from BankRate.com.
