Key To Losing Weight and Keeping It Off Could Be In Your Kitchen Right Now

Imagine that there was a product that could not only help you lose weight but keep it off? What if this product was completely natural, doesn’t require a prescription and best of all, it is inexpensive and widely available. You might even have this miracle product in your home already and if you don’t then it is no further away than a trip to the market. It is grapefruit juice and a recent University of California at Berkeley study has shown some encouraging results.

In this study the researchers fed two groups of mice a diet that was high in fat. One group of mice was given water to drink while the other group drank clarified grapefruit juice (no pulp, just in case you were wondering.) The group that drank the grapefruit juice gained 18% less weight than the other group despite the abundance of delicious, if fatty, food. The researchers also discovered that the group of mice which drank juice had levels of insulin and glucose that were lower than the other group of mice. In fact, the grapefruit juice lowered the rodents’ glucose levels just as effectively as a prescription drug known as metformin which is commonly taken by people with Type 2 Diabetes. The juice-drinking mice were found to have blood glucose levels that were as much as 17% lower than the other mice in the study as well as drastically reduced levels of insulin.

It was thought that the mice which were given juice might have benefitted from an ingredient called naringin which is known to be a powerful agent for weight loss. However, while these mice did benefit from lower blood glucose levels they maintained the same body weight. This suggests that there is another agent in grapefruit juice that also has a positive impact on health and wellness.

It is important to keep in mind that more study is needed to determine exactly how grapefruit juice can help one to lose weight. However, it certainly would not hurt to add some fresh grapefruit juice to your diet. Just make sure you are drinking it the right way.

What does it mean to drink grapefruit juice in the right way? Well, don’t drink it with a meal. The theory is that fresh grapefruit juice should be enjoyed before a meal which will not only give you the benefits described above but also leave less room in your stomach so you will eat less (and fewer calories!)

You should choose fresh grapefruit juice if possible or at least natural grapefruit juice. Try to avoid juices packed with sugar and preservatives. An 8-ounce glass of sweetened grapefruit juice can have as much as twenty calories over a glass of non-sweetened juice. That adds up- especially if you drink four or five glasses per day.

It is true that the average grocery store is packed with unhealthy junk food which in turn contributes to the nation’s obesity problem. However, there is also an abundance of foods such as fresh grapefruit which help us to lead a healthy lifestyle and at the same time are friendly to our wallets.
